At the recent Dynamic Spectrum Alliance Global Summit in Cape Town, in May, the Centre for White Space Communication was privileged to receive “The Award for a Student-Led Initiative or Research on New Opportunities for Dynamic Spectrum Access”.

It’s the first time the DSA has formally celebrated the achievements of its members in this way. The Centre was recognised for its work on multiple dynamic spectrum projects across a range of technical areas; including the development of renewable powered basestations, contribution to the Ofcom TVWS regulations and the use of dynamic spectrum to bring connectivity to rural and digitally excluded communities. Dr. David Crawford collected the award on behalf of the Centre.

In addition to attending the award ceremony, Centre members Mr. Malcolm Brew and Professor Bob Stewart presented slides to the assembly of regulators, members of Government and industry representatives.

The Centre also exhibited recent project results and findings, including the LimeNET – a “network-in-a-box” product created by Lime Microsystems. This system uses the open-source Lime software defined radio board in combination with an Intel i7 processor, making it ideal for high data-rate communication applications such as 2-5G radio and IoT nodes.
